A man was burnt beyond recognition this afternoon, Sunday, May 30, after he allegedly assaulted two women in their home in Framesby and locked himself in a room before starting a fire.
It is alleged that the two women, a 49-year-old mother and her 25-year-old daughter, ran to their neighbour’s house, saying that they were attacked by a man tiling at their house in Kyle Street.
Police spokesperson, Col. Priscilla Naidu, said that police responded to a complaint of assault at this address at approximately 13:00. Upon arrival, the complainant and her daughter
were taken to hospital for treatment.
“Both women were bleeding. The alleged suspect
was seen running after them but then ran back into the house,” Naidu said.
“When police entered the house looking for the suspect, they saw
smoke emitting from a room in the house. The first attempt to break down the door
failed and a window was broken. Due to the thick smoke, they could not see
inside. When the door was eventually broken down, flames shot out and police
had to retreat,” she explained.
“The fire department arrived and extinguished the fire. One male
was found dead and burnt beyond recognition inside the room. His name is
withheld until his next-of-kin has been informed. A portion of the house was
burnt,” Naidu added.
At this stage police have opened an inquest docket. Additional
charges of arson and attempted murder may be included as the investigation
unfolds.
