A man from Algoa Park chased after two suspects late Friday night and shot one after they allegedly stole one of his bakkie’s tyres.

Just before midnight on Friday, June 25, the complainant woke up after hearing his dogs barking at his Birchwood Crescent house. He went outside and noticed that a tyre from his bakkie had been stolen. Two males were seen running with the tyre down the street.

A suspect in a theft from a motor vehicle case was shot by the complainant in Algoa Park on Friday.

According to police spokesperson, Col. Priscilla Naidu, the complainant (40) chased after the suspects and managed to stop them at the corner of Whiteleaf and Silveroak Streets in  Algoa Park. “A fight ensued between the suspects and the complainant. When the suspects lunged at the complainant with a knife, he pulled out his firearm and fired a shot in the ground,” Naidu explained.

“One suspect ran away while the other suspect continued to lunge towards the victim with the knife. Two more shots were fired, hitting the 20-year-old suspect in his neck. The complainant did not sustain any injuries,” she added.

Naidu mentioned that she did not know the extent of the suspect’s injuries but that he is currently in hospital. 

A case of attempted murder and theft from a motor vehicle is under
investigation. The injured suspect is expected to appear in court soon.
