A 32-year-old robber has been sentenced to an effective 12-year imprisonment on June 18, in the Gqeberha Magistrate Court.

According to the police spokesperson, Captain Sandra Janse Van Rensburg, in October 2023 at about 14:30, SAPS Mount Road detectives were busy with an investigation in Steboneath Road in Sydenham when detectives noticed a man running with a knife and cellphone in his hands, SAPS members then became suspicious and pursued after him.

“While the detectives were busy interviewing him at the police station, the complainant arrived at the station to report the robbery,” she said.

“He indicated that he was at the North End Lake in his vehicle, a Toyota Corolla, when he was approached by a suspect wearing a mask and armed with a knife.

“He was threatened and his cell phone was taken.

“The complainant scuffled with the suspect and in the process, he was stabbed in his face and neck. He received medical treatment for the injuries,” she added

The accused remained in custody until the finalisation of the case.

On Tuesday, June 18, the accused Harry Nelson (32) was found guilty on aggravated robbery and possession of suspected stolen property and was sentenced to an effective 12 year imprisonment.

Nelson Mandela Bay District Commissioner, Major General, Vuysile Ncata, has welcomed the sentencing and reiterated that this sentence serves as a lesson to opportunistic criminals prowling the streets and targeting innocent people.
