Number one Chess Player – Somerset College is proud of Joshua

Somerset College proudly celebrates the extraordinary achievement of Joshua Nel (Grade 5). He has been officially ranked as South Africa’s #1 Under-12 chess player according to the latest Chess South Africa national ratings.

With a remarkable rating of 1831.3, Joshua now holds the highest Under-12 rating in the country. This is a milestone that reflects years of dedication, discipline, and hard work.

Joshua’s chess journey began at just five years old around the family chessboard. Since entering his first competitive tournament in 2023, he has played an astounding 275 tournament games. He spent countless weekends and holidays sharpening his skills against some of the nation’s strongest young players. Guided by the family motto, “consistency beats all”, Joshua has steadily climbed the rankings to reach the very top. Josua’s success is also a testament to the mentorship of Mr. Armand Etsebeth and the unwavering support of Somerset College, which has nurtured his exceptional talent.

Beyond his individual triumphs, Joshua has made a significant contribution to Somerset College chess. Last year, he played a crucial role in our team’s victory at the prestigious Top Schools Chess Competition. He showed the strategic thinking and composure that have become his trademark.

What makes Joshua’s achievement even more inspiring is the balance he maintains between academics, sport, and his love of mountain biking. He is a shining example of what can be achieved through passion, perseverance, and commitment.

Congratulations, Joshua! Reaching the top of the national rankings is an incredible accomplishment, and Somerset College could not be prouder. We look forward to watching your journey continue both on and off the chessboard.
