The team of the Sol Plaatje University (SPU) suffered its second defeat, during the third round of the FNB Varsity Shield, by losing 36 – 43 against the team of the FNB Varsity College.

The SPU met Varsity College in a rain-soaked Suzuki Stadium in Kimberley on Friday, 28 February.

Spectators witnessed a thrilling 11-try encounter between the SPU Gemmies and the Varsity College Comets.

As stated by a press release of the Varsity Shield Cup, the home side came out guns blazing, scoring three quick tries through Jaiden Faviers, Jan Potgieter, and Stephan du Toit before the first strategy break.

The second half was an end-to-end battle that saw Edward Sigauke of the Comets pick up his brace and the Comets taking the lead in the 68th min.

The SPU players clawed their way back into the game and were trailing by just three points, with four minutes’ play-time remaining.

The Durban North outfit, who finished as runner’s-up in the previous season, had the final say when Chandler Green scored at the death to give the Comets a win.

Scorers for the SPU are Jan Potgieter, Ethan Manus, Stephan du Toit, Jaiden Faviers, and Bokamoso Maphisa.

The SPU team consisted of Jan Potgieter, Juandré le Roux, Kwandokuhle Dlamini, Tumelo Papane, Thando Shipalana, JJ Fourie, Gareth Maree, Ethan Manus, Khaya Kama (captain), Raees Sahabodien, Stephan du Toit, Jaiden Faviers, Liyabona Maplanga, Bokamoso Maphisa and Tryon China.

The SPU is currently in position five on the log.

In the opening round of the Varsity Shield Cup, the team beat the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN) by 41 – 37, and in the second round SPU lost by 20 – 22 against the team of the Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT).

  • The SPU team will be in action in round four of the Varsity Shield Cup on Friday, 7 March, when they meet the team of the Walter Sisulu University (WSU) at 19:00 at the Sisa Dukashe Stadium at Mdantsane in the Eastern Cape.
