Partners and funders of an in-school breakfast programme serving approximately 4 500 young learners in and around Kuruman, visited participating schools one year after implementation. The aim was to review progress and strengthen collaboration to ensure the initiative continues to meet learners’ needs.
The programme is delivered by Kathu Solar Park and the Tiger Brands Foundation in partnership with the Department of Basic Education, and complements the National School Nutrition Programme (NSNP) which supports learners in quintile 1 to 3 schools across the country.

During visits to the Bankhara-Bodulong, Gaegake, Mahikaneng, Maruping, and Seupe primary schools, principals shared the positive impact on learner attendance, punctuality, concentration, and overall wellbeing โ particularly for children facing socio-economic challenges.
“Had it not been for this programme, we would possibly be counting an increased learner dropout rate from our school.
“This breakfast programme has not only benefitted the learners in terms of starting the day on a non-empty stomach, but it also encourages learners to attend school early and regularly. It has also assisted, encouraged and motivated even learners from disadvantaged backgrounds to cope with their everyday morning school activities,” explained principal B.G. Magome of Bankhara-Bodulong.

By partnering with the foundation, Kathu Solar Park’s beneficiary schools receive highly nutritious, fortified porridges made from sorghum, maize, or oats. These meals are prepared by trained food handlers in clean, well-equipped kitchens to ensure quality and safety. Each learner is provided with their own plate and utensils, allowing them to enjoy their meal with dignity.
The porridges meet World Health Organization (WHO) recommendations for optimal micronutrient levels and help address key health challenges.
Both Kathu Solar Park and the Tiger Brands Foundation remain committed to supporting learner wellbeing, strengthening educational outcomes, and ensuring that every child begins the school day with the nutrition they need to thrive.
