From learner to earner: Driving programme transforms lives

NORTHERN CAPE – Established by Kumba Iron Ore in 2023, the Driver’s License Programme is a social intervention which aims to promote road safety and increase the employability of local youth through equipping participants with the necessary skills to responsibly operate medium to heavy motor vehicles.

Supervised by experienced instructors, the five-month long training schedule creates a pathway for participants to obtain a learner’s license and a code 10 (C1) driving license thereafter.

“The Driving Skills Programme is an initiative designed to specifically empower the youth and residents of the Siyathemba community” says Mpho Letebele, project lead and sustainability integration officer at Kumba Iron Ore.

Since its inception, this initiative has produced more than 100 skilled drivers, creating avenues for economic opportunities for successful participants.

Recent programme beneficiary, Loisi Sindolima (19) from Siyathemba, reflects on her experience: “When I heard about the programme, I saw it as a life-changing opportunity to empower myself and open doors to a brighter future. The program was well-organised, from the learner’s license classes to the practical driving lessons.

“With my driver’s license, I am closer to achieving my dream of securing a stable job and supporting my family.”
