The Northern Cape recently received more than R100 million in the fight against Covid-19 from the Northern Cape Shared Value Initiative in the John Taolo Gaetsewe District.

The premier of the province, Dr Zamani Saul, received the donation on behalf of the provincial government on Tuesday, 7 July.

Saul was joined by Maruping Lekwene, the MEC for Health.

The Northern Cape Shared Value Initiative is an initiative by mines, aiming to achieve greater socio-economic impact within their surrounding communities.

This initiative comes from the Collaborative Forum, consisting of the South 32 Mine, Kathu Solar Park, SIOC Community Development Trust, SIOC Kumba, Kudumane Manganese Reserve, Assmang Blackrock and Assmang Khumani.

The stakeholders came together and combined their complementary strengths to ensure that they assist the provincial government to win the battle against Covid-19.

Through this initiative the mines were able to commit more than R100 million towards the fight against Covid-19.

These include personal protective equipment to hospitals, screening and testing, water supply to villages and isolation and quarantine sites.

“As we move closer to the anticipated Covid-19 peak as a province, it is important that we fight this battle together as government, community and the private sector.

“We need to ensure that we remain safe at all times, wear our masks, avoid gatherings such as parties and remain at a social distance.

“Together we are able to win the battle against Covid-19,” said Saul.
