The Northern Cape Diamonds impressed in Power Week 1 of the annual Telkom Netball League (TNL), climbing to third place in Division 2.

By the end of last year’s TNL, Diamonds climbed from ninth to seventh on the log. During this year’s Power Week 1, from 24 April to 2 May at the Durban University of Technology, Diamonds played eight matches and won five.

Just above Diamonds on 10 points are Kingdom Queens with 11, while the Tornados top the log with 14.

In the standout match on 30 April, Diamonds fought back to secure a 48-44 victory over Sonoblomo. Coming off a 26-76 hammering against the invitational team from Malawi earlier in the day, Diamonds delivered in a tight contest that saw both teams trade scoring runs throughout. The Northern Cape side held a 26-24 lead at half-time, and it stayed tight at 37-36 heading into the final quarter.

A late surge gave Diamonds a four-point cushion in the closing minutes. Despite a late chance for Sonoblomo following a handling error, the Diamonds’ defence held firm for a vital win.

Their other victories were 45-43 against Tshukudu, 50-48 against Lilies, 59-36 against Comets, and 52-50 against Sunbirds.

Their losses were 50-57 against KD Queens, 36-63 against Tornados, and 41-64 against Baobabs.
