The achievements of local entrepreneurs were celebrated at an annual awards ceremony in Uitkoms, Kathu.

These achievements were made possible by Assmang’s Khumani Iron Ore Mine through its Khumo Enterprise and Supplier Development (ESD) programme.

Since its launch in 2018, this programme has supported 105 locally owned businesses in the John Taolo Gaetsewe District Municipality and Tsantsabane, providing a combination of funding, mentorship, and capacity-building. Many of these businesses have gone on to secure contracts in the mining sector, contributing to job creation and supply chain diversification.

In this financial year, the programme focused on strengthening enterprises in the construction, catering, and cleaning sectors, recognising their vital role in both industry operations and community services. A total of 30 businesses in these sectors received targeted financial and non-financial support.

“The 3Cs sectors form an essential part of our local economy,” said Boitumelo Seboko, corporate social responsibility (CSR) manager at Khumani Mine.

At the ceremony, entrepreneurs were acknowledged for perseverance and growth. Certificates were presented to participants, while previous beneficiaries, now suppliers to Khumani Mine, shared success stories, demonstrating the programme’s long-term impact.

The programme is implemented through Khumani’s ESD Unit, which provides mentorship, guidance, and practical skills development. This approach ensures that beneficiaries are equipped to grow sustainably within the broader local economy.

“Supporting small businesses is both a responsibility and a strategic investment,” added Seboko.

“It creates employment and strengthens the communities in which we operate.”
