Maria Wilman (1867-1957), in the driver’s seat, was appointed as the first director of the McGregor Museum in Kimberley on 1 March 1908, an appointment she held until 1947. She retired when she was 79 years old, but continued to work at the museum until 1953. Her two major publications, Rock engravings of Griqualand West and Bechuanaland (1933) and Preliminary Checklist of the Flowering Plants and Ferns of Griqualand West (1946), each would have entailed its share of exploration somewhat off the beaten track. Persuasive and often thinking outside the box, Wilman was known in her circle as “Auntie-Why-Don’t-You”. – McGregor Museum
