Members of the Upington Detectives and Visible Policing unit, assisted by members of the Highway Patrol and the Local Criminal Record Centre (LCRC), traced and arrested the assailant believed to be responsible for the attack on an elderly couple during the early hours of Saturday 15 November in Oosterville, Upington.
The team apprehended and arrested a 36-year-old suspect allegedly found in possession of items stolen from the elderly couple.
The couple – aged 82 and 72, respectively – was allegedly attacked at their residence in Oosterville.
According to preliminary information, residents in the vicinity noticed the residence of the elderly couple in flames and rushed to their assistance. The 82-year-old deceased male was found in bed with multiple stab wounds while his wife was transported to the hospital with serious injuries.
A case of murder, attempted murder, burglary, and arson were registered for investigation.
The police followed up on leads, which led them to the residence of the suspect. He was arrested and is expected to appear in court soon.
The district commissioner of ZF Mgcawu, Maj. Gen. Monica Sebili, condemned this senseless and heinous attack on the vulnerable couple. She applauded the swift response by the team and commended the public for their contribution and assistance.
