CAPE TOWN – The City of Cape Town said on Sunday that it has not received any reports of major incidents as a result of the inclement weather as yet.

The South African Weather Service (SAWS) had issued an orange level 8 weather warning for Sunday to Tuesday which involves disruptive rainfall, strong winds and potential flooding.

As at 11:30 on Sunday, the city’s disaster operations centre had not received reports of major weather-related impacts yet, Sonica Lategan, disaster risk management spokesperson, said.

“There has been some flooding of roadways to date, due to heavy downpours. We urge motorists to please reduce their speed and increase their following distances, and also to drive with their headlights on so they are more visible to oncoming traffic,” she warned.

All services remain on standby to respond to any incidents that may occur.

Lategan said the weather warnings issued by SAWS remain in place.

“The first of the two frontal systems has made landfall, but a more powerful system is expected overnight into Monday morning.”

The city’s disaster coordinating team has been activated to monitor the situation and coordinate the city’s responses.

To report any emergency incidents call the public emergency communication centre on 021 480 7700.
