Newton Park home invasion: Case moved to High Court

GQEBERHA – The case against three accused in the murder of Gqeberha businessman Daniel de Jager has been transferred to the High Court following their latest appearance in the Gqeberha Magistrate’s Court today, 1 April.

PE Express previously reported that Estelle le Grange, Lee-Roy Scholtz and Anke-Mari Cilliers face charges of conspiracy to commit murder, murder and robbery with aggravating circumstances, linked to De Jager’s death at his Newton Park home in October 2025.

During proceedings, the matter was certified as trial-ready in terms of Section 114(4) of the Criminal Procedure Act, paving the way for the case to be heard in the High Court.

All three accused remain in custody, having abandoned their bail applications earlier in the process.

The court heard that the accused had been served with the indictment and a summary of substantial facts. The defence raised concerns that the documents had not been provided prior to signing, however indicated satisfaction after reviewing the contents.

The matter was remanded for trial to start on 14 April in the Gqeberha High Court.

The trio were previously granted a final postponement to allow for outstanding forensic evidence and investigative processes to be finalised, including DNA analysis and other reports central to the State’s case.

It is alleged that De Jager was killed during what was initially presented as a house robbery, with the State contending the attack was staged.
