Four killed, four others seriously injured in Gqeberha M4 crash

GQEBERHA – A head-on collision on the M4 in Gqeberha early on the morning of 8 August has claimed the lives of four people and left four others seriously injured.

According to the Eastern Cape Department of Transport, preliminary information indicates that the VW Polo, which was carrying six occupants, collided head-on with a minibus taxi carrying two occupants at approximately 05:30.

“Four occupants of the Polo were killed, while the remaining two occupants sustained injuries. Both occupants of the minibus taxi also sustained serious injuries,” the department said.

The department further said the VW Polo was travelling from south to north, in the direction of Deal Party from Summerstrand, while the minibus taxi was travelling in the opposite direction.

“It is suspected that the VW Polo crossed the centre median, burst through the guard rails and ended up facing the oncoming minibus taxi,” the department said.

The department indicated that a case of culpable homicide has been opened with the South African Police Service for further investigation.

The department said the exact circumstances surrounding the crash are yet to be determined.

The department has also extended its condolences to the families and loved ones of the deceased and wished the injured a speedy recovery.

“Motorists are urged to exercise extreme caution and obey the rules of the road at all times,” the department said.
