Healthy trees are being felled for firewood at Wolhuterskop Nature Reserve in Dihlabeng, despite large quantities of dead and fallen wood already available on the property.
The Democratic Alliance (DA) identified the practice during an oversight visit to the reserve and will request written responses from the municipal manager, access to entry registers, security reports and related documentation.

The cutting of living trees raises questions about oversight and management at the reserve, particularly as staff monitor the only entrance and security personnel operate within the facility.
Urgent provincial intervention needed as wildlife crisis grips Wolhuterskop Nature Reserve
The DA said allegations suggest wood may be used to conceal and remove game meat unlawfully from the reserve, which would warrant immediate investigation.
Wolhuterskop represents a valuable conservation area with tourism and revenue-generating potential for Dihlabeng.
The party said it will consider laying criminal charges with the South African Police Service if unlawful conduct is confirmed.
