PRETORIA – The Vodacom Bulls have signaled their intent for this Saturday’s critical Champions Cup encounter against the Glasgow Warriors, unveiling a starting XV bolstered by tactical rotations and raw physicality. Following a tough outing against Munster, Director of Rugby Jake White has opted to “shuffle the deck,” balancing veteran experience with the explosive energy of the franchise’s rising stars.

The backline shake-up

The most talking point-worthy adjustments come in the backline. In a move designed to add versatility and counter-attacking spark, David Kriel shifts from the impact bench to start at fullback.

This tactical pivot sees the legendary Willie le Roux move to the replacements. While some might raise an eyebrow at benching a centurion, the strategy is clear: utilize Le Roux’s peerless tactical vision to navigate the high-pressure “championship minutes” in the latter stages at Scotstoun.

Further adjustments include:

  • Canan Moodie: Returns to his preferred role at outside center (No. 13).
  • Cheswill Jooste: After an impressive cameo last week, the pacey winger earns a starting berth on the right wing.
  • Stedman Gans: Moves to the bench to provide versatile cover across the midfield.

Power in the pack

In the engine room, the Bulls have been forced into one change due to injury. With the experienced Nizaam Carr sidelined, the explosive Cameron Hanekom earns a promotion to the No. 8 jersey. Hanekom’s inclusion is expected to ramp up the Bulls’ frontline physicality and offer a more aggressive presence at the breakdown—a necessity for the “gruelling physical contest” anticipated in Scotland.

On the bench, Mornay Smith replaces Khutha Mchunu as the reserve tighthead, while Jeandré Rudolph joins the squad to provide specialized loose-forward cover

Consistency where it counts

Despite the rotation, the spine of the team remains formidable. The Springbok halfback pairing of Handré Pollard and Embrose Papier will once again pull the strings, ensuring the Bulls maintain control over the game’s tempo. Leading the charge is captain Marcell Coetzee, whose work rate will be vital in what promises to be a cold, hard night at Scotstoun.
