The Bulls will bid farewell to one of their most versatile warriors at the end of the season, with utility back David Kriel confirming his departure to French giants La Rochelle in July. The news, announced on Tuesday, marks the end of a six-year chapter at Loftus Versfeld for the 143-cap stalwart who has become synonymous with adaptability and consistency across the backline.

Kriel, who can slot into virtually any position from fullback to wing and even centre, admitted the decision to leave Pretoria wasn’t made lightly. Yet the lure of Top 14 rugby and a fresh challenge in France proved impossible to resist.

“I couldn’t be more excited to be heading there to learn about French culture, to meet new people, and still do the thing that I love most,” Kriel revealed to KickOff.com.

The move represents a significant coup for La Rochelle, who are securing a player with immense experience and tactical nous. Kriel’s ability to cover multiple positions makes him an invaluable asset, particularly in the demanding environment of European rugby where squad depth can make or break a campaign.

A childhood dream realised

For Kriel, wearing the Bulls jersey wasn’t just a career choice, it was the fulfilment of a boyhood ambition. His gratitude towards the franchise and everyone who shaped his journey was evident in his heartfelt farewell message.

“It was a dream to play for the Bulls since I was a young boy; I’m just thankful to everyone who made it possible for me to achieve that dream,” he said.

“I would like to thank everyone who contributed to my journey with the Bulls. I’m very thankful for every coach, every player, every staff member, and every fan for making my time here so memorable. I’m grateful for each opportunity and the growth as not only a player but as a human being.”

The emotional weight of leaving isn’t lost on the utility man, who described the decision as “very difficult” after six years of calling Loftus home.

“Goodbyes are never easy, especially to something that means so much to me and a place I’ve called home for the last six years,” Kriel acknowledged.

Unfinished business

Before he departs for French shores, Kriel has important work to complete in Bulls colours. The Pretoria outfit are locked in a fierce battle for a Top 8 finish in the United Rugby Championship, with a play-off berth hanging in the balance. His experience and versatility will be crucial as the Bulls navigate the run-in to the business end of the season.

The 143-cap milestone speaks volumes about Kriel’s durability and importance to the Bulls’ cause over the years. Whether deployed at fullback, on the wing, or in the midfield, he’s consistently delivered composed performances that have helped anchor the Bulls’ backline through various campaigns.

What awaits in France

La Rochelle, who have established themselves as one of the Top 14’s powerhouses in recent seasons, will provide Kriel with a completely different rugby education. The French competition is renowned for its physicality and tactical complexity, offering a stern test for any player looking to expand their horizons.

The move also represents South African rugby’s ongoing exodus to Europe, with numerous Springboks and provincial stars seeking opportunities abroad. For Kriel, it’s a chance to test himself against Europe’s elite whilst experiencing a new culture and way of life.

As the Bulls prepare to lose one of their most dependable servants, supporters will be hoping Kriel can sign off in style by helping deliver silverware, or at least a play-off run, before he embarks on his French adventure.
