Ackermann: Bulls prepared for ‘Big Challenge’ against high-flying Glasgow

GLASGOW, Scotland – Vodacom Bulls head coach Johan Ackermann has warned his side that nothing short of their absolute best will suffice when they step onto the turf at Scotstoun Stadium this Saturday. The Pretoria-based outfit faces a daunting round of 16 Champions Cup clash against a Glasgow Warriors side that currently sits atop the United Rugby Championship (URC) standings.

The Bulls are well aware of the “mountain” they have to climb. Their previous visit to Scotstoun in October resulted in a 21-12 defeat, and the Scottish side’s formidable home record makes them arguably the toughest out in the competition right now.

One game at a time

Despite the pressure of a looming URC playoff race, Ackermann has refused to look past this weekend. Speaking to reporters during the team announcement, he emphasized the importance of the Champions Cup as a standalone priority.

“This game is a big game,” Ackermann said. “It’s an opportunity for us to progress in our competition, so therefore we felt we can still keep our continuity going. We just feel we can’t control the future. We can only control what we know is ahead, and that is Glasgow. That’s the challenge.”

The coach has opted for a side built on continuity, rewarding the core group that has kept the Bulls in contention domestically, while acknowledging that several players were “unlucky” to miss out on the match-day 23.

The Glasgow threat

The Warriors enter the knockout stages brimming with confidence. Boosted by a host of Scottish internationals returning from a successful Six Nations campaign, the home side is known for a high-octane brand of rugby supported by a rock-solid set-piece.

Ackermann identified several key areas where the Bulls must improve to avoid a repeat of their October disappointment:

  • Error Rate: The Bulls must cut out the unforced mistakes that have crept into their game in recent weeks.
  • Set-Piece Stability: Glasgow’s pack is notoriously disciplined at home.
  • Clinical Finishing: Against a side that scores tries in bunches, the Bulls cannot afford to waste entries into the 22m area.

A test against the best

For Ackermann, the match is more than just a knockout fixture; it is a measuring stick for where his squad stands on the global stage.

“You play the game you play against the best players in the world,” Ackermann acknowledged. “You’re constantly up there to test yourself, and that’s what we’ll get on Saturday. It’s an opportunity to test ourselves.”

The Bulls will be hoping to avoid the “late pain” suffered by their coastal rivals, the Sharks, who were knocked out of the Challenge Cup by Connacht on Friday night. With the Stormers also facing a high-stakes showdown against Toulon, the pressure is on the Pretoria side to fly the South African flag high in Europe.

Bulls Lineup Snapshot: The team features a Springbok-heavy halfback pairing of Handré Pollard and Embrose Papier, while Marcell Coetzee leads a physical pack tasked with disrupting Glasgow’s rhythm from the outset.
