GALWAY, Ireland – It was a tale of two halves at a rain-swept sportsground on Friday night as the Hollywoodbets Sharks saw their Challenge Cup dreams evaporate in a 29-12 round of 16 defeat to Connacht. Despite leading at the interval, JP Pietersen’s men were left reeling as the Irish province unleashed a 22-point second-half onslaught to secure a quarter-final berth.
First-half dominance: The Jean Smith show
The Sharks arrived in Ireland looking to make a statement, and for the first 40 minutes, they did exactly that. Utilizing the treacherous wind and rain, flyhalf Jean Smith produced a masterclass in tactical kicking.
The Durban-based side pinned Connacht deep in their own territory, rewarded early with a penalty in the sixth minute. While the Sharks struggled to convert several attacking lineouts into tries against a resolute Irish defense, their scrum dominance allowed Smith to keep the scoreboard ticking. By the 34th minute, Smith had slotted four penalties – including a monstrous effort from the halfway line—to give the visitors a deserved 12-7 lead at the break.
Connacht’s only first-half reply came against the run of play when winger Chay Mullins finished a slick wide move in the corner, converted by Sam Gilbert.
The second-half collapse
The momentum shifted violently after the restart. With the wind now at their backs, Connacht abandoned their defensive shell and began to dictate the physical terms of the contest.
The turning point arrived in the 47th minute. After the Sharks successfully blunted an initial driving maul, they couldn’t stop center Cathal Forde, who crashed over from close range. It was a lead the home side would never relinquish.
As the Sharks’ discipline began to waver, Connacht grew clinical:
- Shamus Hurley-Langton capitalized on a bold decision to kick for the corner instead of taking three points, scoring from a well-orchestrated lineout move.
- Cathal Forde then turned the knife, slicing through the Sharks’ midfield for his second try of the night, effectively ending the contest.
Jean Smith had a chance to stem the bleeding in the 60th minute, but his penalty attempt drifted wide – a symbolic moment as the Sharks’ energy visibly faded in the final quarter.
Scorers:
- Connacht: Tries: Chay Mullins, Cathal Forde (2), Shamus Hurley-Langton. Cons: Sam Gilbert (3). Pen: Sam Gilbert.
- Sharks: Pens: Jean Smith (4).
