The latest provincial dam readings, released on 28 September, paint a mixed but reassuring picture for water security across the Overberg region as the dry summer months approach.
Theewaterskloof Dam, the largest reservoir in the Western Cape water supply system, stands at 75,8% capacity, down slightly from 76,5% the previous week and notably lower than the 85,3% recorded at the same time last year. The gradual decline follows a drier winter, though levels remain above the critical lows experienced during the 2017-’18 drought.
Eikenhof Dam on the Palmiet River near Grabouw continues to overflow at 101,3%, unchanged from the previous week and consistent with the same period last year. The dam, which supplies irrigation water to the Groenland Water User Association, has remained at or near full capacity for several months.
De Bos Dam, the primary water source for Greater Overstrand, is reported at 100%, holding firm at full supply capacity, marginally above the 99,8% recorded at this time last year. Overstrand Municipality has no water restrictions in place for Hermanus.
