Four teenagers shot dead, one wounded in Motherwell mass shooting

GQEBERHA – Four teenagers were fatally shot and one injured as the South African Police Service (SAPS) in Gqeberha works around the clock investigating the murders that took place in a house in Mnenga Street, NU10, Motherwell yesterday, 27 May.

According to SAPS spokesperson Brigadier Nobuntu Gantana, it is alleged that at about 13:30, SAPS Motherwell was alerted to a shooting at the address.

“On arrival, first responders found five males inside the house,” she said.

“Four males were lying in the lounge with gunshot wounds to their heads; two were unresponsive and two were gasping for breath, while a fifth man was allegedly found unresponsive in the bedroom, also with a gunshot wound to the head.”

Gantana added that the Metro Emergency Medical Services declared three males deceased on arrival. “While paramedics attempted to resuscitate a fourth victim, he tragically also passed away at the scene, and a fifth injured male was rushed to hospital for medical treatment,” she said.

“The deceased are four males: two aged 18 years and two aged 17 years,” Gantana added, also noting that their names will be released once next-of-kin notification is completed.

“A murder case with four counts and an additional count of attempted murder has been opened at SAPS Motherwell,” she said. “The investigation is being handled by the SAPS Serious and Violent Crime Investigation (SVCI) Unit.”

Gantana said that the motive for the murders and the identity of the suspects are currently unknown. “No witnesses have come forward.”
