GQEBERHA – A four-month-old baby girl has died at a Newton Park preschool after she was found unresponsive.
The baby was taking a nap at Little Learner Preschool Academy in Sixth Avenue, Newton Park, on Wednesday, 26 August, when she was found unresponsive.
According to police, the baby was fed at about 11:30 and placed down for a nap at around 12:15.
However, the afternoon took a tragic turn when at around 16:30 a nanny went to check on the infant, only to find her unresponsive.
“The school principal was immediately alerted and the baby was sadly declared deceased at the scene,” said police spokesperson Brigadier Nobuntu Gantana.
She added that a postmortem examination had established that the infant died as a result of a ‘natural medical condition’.
SAPS Mount Road is investigating the circumstances surrounding the baby’s death as an inquest.
“While the investigation into the full circumstances surrounding this incident remains ongoing, at this stage, no foul play is suspected,” said Gantana.
The PE Express contacted Little Learner Preschool Academy for comment on the baby’s death. The preschool said it would issue a statement at a later stage.
Police have appealed to the public to respect the privacy of the grieving family and refrain from speculation while the investigation continues.
SAPS extended its heartfelt condolences to the baby’s family and loved ones during this difficult time.
