GRAAFF-REINET – Four men have been arrested and two unlicensed firearms confiscated following a coordinated operation between South African Police Service (SAPS) units across provincial boundaries, representing a significant success in combating illegal weapon distribution.

The arrests occurred on Friday evening 29 November 2025 after Crime Intelligence officers in the Western Cape provided crucial information to their Eastern Cape counterparts regarding suspicious individuals travelling with illegal weapons.

According to regional SAPS spokesperson Captain Marius McCarthy, intelligence indicated that four men in a white Volkswagen Polo were travelling from Vredenburg to the Eastern Cape whilst allegedly carrying unlicensed firearms and ammunition.

The Sarah Baartman District Task Team acted swiftly upon receiving this intelligence. At approximately 20:35, officers spotted the vehicle matching the description in Graaff-Reinet and successfully intercepted it on Parsonage Street.

A thorough search of the vehicle yielded significant results. Officers discovered a plastic container containing 17 live rounds of ammunition concealed within the vehicle’s glovebox compartment.

The search revealed further contraband when police found two unlicensed 9mm pistols hidden within the pockets of a navy jacket hanging from the driver’s headrest. An additional plastic bag containing 47 rounds of ammunition was also found secreted within the same jacket.

All four occupants, aged between 32 and 35 years, have been charged with possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition. The vehicle has been impounded pending further forensic examination.

Detective units are currently processing and profiling the suspects, with preliminary investigations suggesting potential connections to at least one serious crime committed in the Western Cape province.

The accused are expected to appear before Graaff-Reinet Magistrates’ Court in due course.

This operation highlights the effectiveness of interprovincial cooperation in tackling cross-border criminal activities and represents another victory in the ongoing campaign against illegal weapon proliferation in South Africa.
