PAARL – Four locals are ready for a red-hot showdown in Cape Town. From a defending champ to a father-and-son rivalry, the Boland’s finest are ready to braai their boerewors for glory.
The Boland may be known for its fine wine but, believe it or not, some of the country’s best boerewors is also produced in this region. This year four local talents have secured their spots in the Top 10 of this year’s ‘Shoprite and Checkers Championship Boerewors Competition’.
Between Wellington and Paarl the air is thick with anticipation. This year’s local line-up features returning champion Tyron Adams from Wellington, seasoned braai expert and first-time contestant Roberto Agrela from Paarl as well as Wellington’s very own father-and-son duo Roland and Xavier Blaauw.
For Adams, who claimed the title in 2023, this year carries the weight of expectation. “It’s special being back, but also nerve-racking. There’s more pressure when people know your name.” Agrela is the wildcard in the Boland pack. Entering for the very first time, he credited the Afrikaans song “Boereworsgordyn” by Robbie Wessels and Appel for sparking his curiosity about making wors and his decision to enter the competition. Then there’s the Blaauw household, where boerewors is more than a meal; it’s become a family sport. Roland Blaauw works for the Shoprite Group and has reached the Top 10 twice. His wife Yvonne won the competition in 2018, while their eldest son Delano took the crown in 2020. This year, Roland’s up against his youngest, 18-year-old Xavier, in matric at Huguenot High School. “It’s nice competing against my dad,” he said. “It’s even nicer doing better than him.”
All Boland contenders believe great boerewors starts with quality meat, the right spice balance and the joy of gathering around a braai. The final cook-off takes place on Saturday 23 August in Cape Town. The winning recipe will be available in Shoprite and Checkers stores from Friday 5 September.
