Residents across the Eastern Cape have been urged to brace for severe weather conditions as the South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued a Level 6 impact-based warning for disruptive rain expected to affect large parts of the province from Tuesday, 5 to 7 May.
According to SAWS, a cut-off low-pressure system is forecast to move over the Eastern Cape, bringing widespread showers and thundershowers. Weather officials have warned that undercutting conditions along the coast are likely to intensify rainfall, particularly over the South Coast and adjacent interior, raising the risk of significant flooding.
The warning applies to several districts and municipalities, including Buffalo City, Great Kei, Kouga, Kou-Kamma, Makana, Ndlambe, Nelson Mandela Bay, Ngqushwa and the Sundays River Valley. Communities along the coastline, stretching up to Kei Mouth, are expected to be among the hardest hit.
The Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality (NMBM) caution that the anticipated heavy and persistent rainfall could lead to flooding of formal and informal settlements, roads and bridges, while also posing a danger to life. Some communities may become temporarily isolated due to impassable roads. Infrastructure damage and disruptions to livelihoods are also likely, with hazardous driving conditions expected as a result of slippery surfaces and reduced visibility.
In Nelson Mandela Bay, the municipality’s Disaster Management Centre has echoed the warning, urging residents to take immediate precautions as the metro prepares for possible localised impacts. Officials have highlighted the risk of flooding in low-lying areas, as well as potential disruptions to essential services.

Residents are advised to avoid travelling unless absolutely necessary, particularly on flooded roads, and to refrain from attempting to cross swollen rivers or fast-flowing streams, whether on foot or by vehicle. The municipality has also encouraged households to move valuables to higher ground where possible, ensure proper drainage around their homes, and remain vigilant by monitoring regular weather updates via local radio and official communication platforms.

Authorities continue to stress that public safety remains a priority, urging communities across the Eastern Cape, including Nelson Mandela Bay, to remain cautious and prepared as the severe weather system moves through the province.
