Somerset West police are investigating a case of culpable homicide following a fatal collision at the intersection of Victoria Road and the N2 last Wednesday (10 June).
The crash, which occurred around 15:00, claimed the life of the driver and left a pedestrian injured.
Police stated a full investigation into the circumstances of the incident has been launched. According to police statements, an eyewitness reported hearing a loud bang before the vehicle skidded along the road and struck a pedestrian. The driver appeared to be injured inside the vehicle and the windscreen was badly damaged.
Paramedics who responded to the incident administered emergency care at the scene, but the driver died of his injuries before he could be transported to a nearby hospital for medical attention.
The injured pedestrian was stabilised and taken to hospital for further medical treatment. The pedestrian’s current condition could not be confirmed.
Police have confirmed that the exact cause of the accident remains undetermined.
The police are also investigating a second case of culpable homicide following a fatal pedestrian incident on the N2 near the local high school on Sunday night (14 June). The incident occurred just before 19:00.
According to a statement, the driver of the vehicle was changing lanes when a pedestrian suddenly attempted to cross the highway. The pedestrian was struck and died at the scene.
The identity of the deceased has not been confirmed.
