Local authorities have opened a case of culpable homicide following a pedestrian accident that claimed the life of a 57-year-old man on the N2 highway in Somerset West on Friday (15 May).
The incident occurred just before 14:00, drawing an immediate response from emergency services and law enforcement agencies.
According to Somerset West police, an eyewitness reported that the man was attempting to cross the busy highway when he was struck by an oncoming truck. He was pronounced dead at the scene by medical personnel.

Police were not able to confirm whether the deceased was a resident of the Helderberg.
The incident caused immediate traffic delays on the N2 as emergency vehicles secured the area. One lane was temporarily closed to allow authorities to process the scene, resulting in a brief traffic backup before the road was fully reopened.
Somerset West station commander Colonel Jacolize Fleischmann expressed deep sadness over the incident and extended her heartfelt condolences to the family of the deceased.
