Somerset West Hockey Club (SWHC) has spent more than half a century proving that it is far more than an organisation – it is a family-orientated, values-driven community that has connected generations of players, surviving and thriving through decades of local growth.
What began as a bold vision by a handful of hockey enthusiasts in 1974 has blossomed into one of the largest and most respected hockey clubs in Western Province, boasting an active membership of over 450.
The SWHC story began 52 years ago when Jerry Garrett, Terry McIntyre, Albert Dunford and the late Mervyn Traut – who passed away last year – shared a dream of establishing a hockey hub in the Helderberg. Starting with just 20 players, many of whom had never held a hockey stick, they laid a foundation built on determination and a culture of belonging.
The club’s competitive edge was evident from the outset. The men’s first team entered the league in 1975 and immediately dominated, clinching the title with an astonishing record of 78 goals scored and only 13 conceded.
First ladies’ team
A men’s second team was established in 1976, and by 1988 the club welcomed its first women’s team to the field.
“From a handful of dreamers with hockey sticks in 1974 to a thriving, multi-generational sporting community today, the club has always remained true to its founding spirit,” the club said in a statement.

Under the leadership of chairperson Jan de Waal and honorary president Chris Beart, SWHC currently fields an impressive 27 teams across various leagues – six senior men’s teams, six senior women’s teams, five masters’ teams and 10 junior teams across different age groups.
This vast structure reflects the club’s dual commitment to high-performance sport and widespread community participation.
Despite its size and regional influence, SWHC operates without a permanent home ground. The club functions as a nomadic powerhouse, relying on rented astro facilities at local schools in the area.
On any given week, players and supporters spread out across the turf at Beaumont Primary School, Parel Vallei High School, Somerset House, Rhenish and Somerset College to practise and play their fixtures.
While these partnerships with local schools keep the club moving forward, leadership is firmly looking towards an ambitious future. Central to the club’s long-term vision is the dream of securing its own permanent, dedicated astro.
Though plans remain in the early stages, a true hockey hub would not only unify the club’s 27 teams under one roof, but would also strengthen player development pipelines and secure a lasting legacy for future generations of Helderberg hockey players.
