A domestic worker from Macassar, Chantel Visser (41), has been sentenced to 15 years’ imprisonment for theft after being found guilty of stealing valuable items and cash from her employer in Somerset West.
The theft occurred between 14 and 27 March 2021.
The complainant discovered the items missing after using a spare key to access the safe when the original key could not be found. Visser was arrested on 1 April 2021 alongside a second accused, who was later acquitted. Stolen items were worth an estimated R10 million.
Police spokesperson Suzan Jantjies confirmed Visser was the only person with access to the safe apart from the complainant and his wife. Visser pleaded not guilty but was convicted in the Somerset West Regional Court on 10 April.
On Monday 6 July, she was sentenced to 15 years’ imprisonment, with two years suspended for five years.
