The MTN SHIFT Gaming Experience 2026 comes to Somerset Mall from Friday 15 to Sunday 17 May, giving competitors and curious spectators alike a shot at a share of a R350 000 national prize pool, with spots at the Canal Walk finals also up for grabs.
Preceded by an online qualifier on Sunday 10 May, the Somerset Mall stop is the second leg of the eight-venue nationwide tour – and whether you are a seasoned competitor or picking up a controller in a tournament setting for the first time, there is a place for you.
Now in its fourth year, the series – presented by Hyprop in partnership with MTN and managed by ACGL, one of South Africa’s most respected e-sports organisers – visits eight shopping centres from April through August, culminating in a national finals showdown at Canal Walk in August.

The action centres on two titles:
EA FC 26, the flagship football simulation game, and Beat Saber, MTN’s adrenaline-fuelled VR rhythm challenge.
Beyond the headline tournaments, the mall event also features:
- the Fighting Cup spanning three titles – Brawlhalla (Friday), Tekken (Saturday) and Street Fighter 6 (Sunday) – with mall gift cards of R1 000 and R500 for the top two finishers each day;
- a PC gaming zone and free play stations;
- a keyboard rebuild Race; and
- spectator-friendly activations for anyone curious about competitive gaming up close.
- There is something on offer for every kind of gamer who walks through the doors.
How the competition works
The EA FC 26 mall tournament runs across 12 heats across the weekend, with the top two players from each heat advancing to the mall final on the Sunday. The top four finishers from the preceding online qualifier also earn a direct place in the final. The mall final winner progresses to the national football final at Canal Walk on Sunday 30 August, when a prize pool of R50 000 is up for grabs. Mall finalists receive Hyprop gift cards worth R2 500 (first), R1 500 (second) and R1 000 (third).
Defending champion Hamza Moosa qualifies automatically to defend his title at the national final, with an additional finalist spot awarded via the external ACGL competition.
The Beat Saber competition, hosted by MTN on its Battle+ esports platform, runs in parallel.
The highest scorer across the three-day mall event earns a place at the Beat Saber national final on Sunday 20 September, where a further R50 000 is split across the top four finishers.
“MTN is committed to connecting South Africans to the things they love, and gaming is one of the fastest growing passions in the country,” said Muyiwa Ladipo, chief consumer officer of consumer prepaid at MTN South Africa.
“Through the Beat Saber competition and the Battle+ platform, we’re giving gamers a chance to compete, connect and win in ways that go far beyond the screen.”
Christie Stanbridge, brand and campaigns manager at Hyprop, added: “SHIFT has grown into something that genuinely reflects the diversity of South Africa’s gaming community.
“What makes this series special is that it meets players where they already are – in the shopping malls they visit every week – and gives them a real chance to compete, connect and win.”
