It was a weekend of high stakes and tough lessons for local cricket as both Helderberg and Macassar cricket clubs lost their championship finals.
Despite individual brilliance and disciplined bowling performances, the pressure of the chase proved too much for both local teams at Newlands Cricket Grounds.
In the First Division C Ama20 final, Helderberg CC faced a strong side from Bergvliet CC. After winning the toss and electing to bat, Bergvliet posted a challenging 168/7 in their 20 overs.
The score could’ve been much higher, but Dexter Hindley delivered a death bowling masterclass. Finishing with excellent figures of 3/29, he broke Bergvliet’s momentum.
Hindley was well supported by Gregan Mouers (2/26) and Waqaar Josephs (1/28), whose economical spells kept Helderberg CC in the title race.
Their reply started with intent, but they soon struggled against disciplined Bergvliet CC fielding. Junaid Sylvester and Blaze Roos provided hope with composed innings of 28 runs apiece, but the batting order struggled to maintain rhythm. Helderberg CC finished on 120/7 after 20 overs falling 48 runs short.
Meanwhile, Macassar CC also lost their First Division D Ama20 final, losing by 31 runs to Montrose CC.
After sending Montrose in to bat, the Macassar bowlers showed excellent discipline to restrict them to a manageable 133/8.
Faiz Kippie led the attack with a clinical 2/15 from four overs. He found good support from Devon Kriel (1/11) and Ebrahim Salie (1/14), both maintaining economy rates under four runs per over.
The chase began promisingly as Pieter Samuels anchored the innings with a steady 40 from 38 balls.
When Rowayne Sinden added aggression with a quick-fire 20 from 15 deliveries, a comeback seemed possible.
However, momentum shifted when Montrose’s Robin Pretorius (3/16) tore through the middle order, ending
Macassar’s title hopes as they stalled at 102/9.
