ExSolar Solar Solutions celebrates 10 years of business success.

When David Cooke was working on remote repeater sites across Africa for his radio communication company in 1998, he couldn’t have predicted that this experience would lead to founding one of Southern Africa’s foremost solar distributors and installers.

Today, ExSolar Solar Solutions stands as a testament to how innovation born from necessity can transform into industry leadership. Based in Somerset West, ExSolar Solar Solutions opened its doors on 1 March 2016, built on the solid foundation of Cooke’s extensive technical expertise. With a Master’s degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering and a Bachelor’s degree in Electronics and Mathematics, Cooke brings over two decades of experience to the renewable energy sector.

Foundation of success

The company’s journey began 28 years ago with The Exporter CC, specialising in Motorola radio communication sales, distribution and installations across Africa. It was during installations at remote, off-grid locations that Cooke identified a critical need for reliable solar power solutions – a realisation that would eventually reshape his career and significantly contribute to the country’s solar industry.

ExSolar has evolved into a one-stop solution for both residential and commercial energy needs, offering a comprehensive range of services that covers every aspect of modern energy requirements. Their solar energy solutions encompass new solar PV system installations, ongoing solar PV maintenance and cleaning, as well as third-party backup and solar system audits to ensure optimal performance of existing installations.

Beyond solar-specific services, ExSolar provides complete general electrical services including electrical inspections and Certificates of Compliance, single and three-phase electrical work, electrical fault finding, distribution board rewiring and electrical work for renovations.

The company has also expanded into the growing field of energy management, offering energy monitoring and efficiency assessments alongside home automation solutions that include lighting control, geyser management, and smart energy management systems.

This integrated approach means customers can rely on ExSolar not just for their initial solar installation, but for all ongoing electrical and energy management needs, making them a true partner in achieving long-term energy independence and efficiency.

Earning industry recognition

ExSolar’s commitment to excellence hasn’t gone unnoticed. In June last year, the company was announced as a nominee for the prestigious South African Photovoltaic Industry Association (SAPVIA) Awards in the “Excellence in Local Manufacturing and Supply Chain” category. Additionally, ExSolar is a Proudly South African company and is PV GreenCard registered.

It serves as an approved installer and supplier for premium brands including Victron Energy, Solar MD, Freedom Won, and Schletter, ensuring customers receive only the highest quality components and installations.

What started as a solo engineering venture has grown into a robust team of about 18 employees, many of whom have been with the company since its inception. This continuity ensures that customers benefit from accumulated expertise and consistent service quality.

Customers visiting ExSolar can expect professional, knowledgeable service from a team committed to going the extra mile. The company also offers training to both installers and end users, contributing to the broader development of solar expertise in the region.

Future growth

Looking ahead, ExSolar has ambitious plans for organic growth, particularly in the commercial sector. The company is developing Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) offerings to serve larger-scale business clients, expanding beyond their strong residential foundation.

A key component of this expansion is PowerTrim, a new product that will be introduced as part of their commercial offering, demonstrating ExSolar’s continued commitment to innovation in the renewable energy space.

ExSolar’s retail shop welcomes the public with convenient operating hours from Monday to Friday between 08:00 and 16:30 for both administrative services and retail shopping, with Saturday hours from 08:00 to 13:00 for retail services only. Customers can also visit their display stand at The Building Centre, which provides a hands-on opportunity to explore the comprehensive product range and see the quality of their solar solutions firsthand.
