Chantal Cerfontein, Stuart Pringle and Xolani Sotashe have been honoured by the City of Cape Town for their years of service to the Helderberg.

At an event held last Thursday (20 August), the three councillors were among those recognised for long-standing dedication to their communities and local government.

Cerfontein, current Subcouncil 8 chairperson, was one of 20 councillors to receive the title of Alderwoman.

The title of alderman/alderwoman is awarded to councillors who have served 20 years or more in local government, or who have accumulated 20 points through various leadership roles, including service as a councillor, committee chairperson, Mayoral Committee member, mayor, deputy mayor, speaker or chief whip.

Aldermanship is conferred for life and Cerfontein was presented with a lapel badge and medal with a neck ribbon at the ceremony.

Alderman Stuart Pringle and Alderman Xolani Sotashe were recognised for over two decades of service to the Helderberg, both having served for 26 years.

Long-service awards were presented to councillors who have served the City, its council and its residents for 20 years or more.

“These years of service represent far more than a number. They represent decades of engagement with communities, difficult decisions, changing, often challenging circumstances and a sustained commitment to the responsibilities entrusted to elected representatives,” said council speaker Alderwoman Felicity Purchase.

They were among 11 councillors recognised for long service, representing a combined 284 years of service across the municipality.

At the ceremony Alderman Clive Justus was named Councillor of the Year for 2026. He has served the City for 38 years, leading various committees and serving as a Mayoral Committee member and portfolio committee chairperson, while mentoring younger councillors.

Purchase said the awards serve as a reminder of the importance of recognising dedicated public service.

“On behalf of the City, I extend my sincere congratulations to every recipient. Their collective contribution has helped shape our council and our city, and their service deserves our respect and appreciation,” she said.
