Learners of Altena Primary School gained valuable life-saving skills from snake handlers, emergency responders and police dogs during a special Safety Awareness Day on Thursday 19 March.
AfriForum Helderberg hosted the event with support from local emergency services and security organisations, providing learners with hands-on safety training across multiple disciplines.
ER24 and Fidelity ADT Fire staff demonstrated essential fire safety procedures, teaching the “stop, drop, and roll” technique while also showing medical emergency procedures and explaining life-saving equipment to the children.
Blackie Swart from Blackie Swart Snake Relocation 24/7 shared crucial snake safety tips with learners, while trainers from the Vetus Schola K9 Unit showcased their four-legged partners’ impressive capabilities.
Local police and members of the Strand Community Policing Forum supported the initiative, with Lieutenant-Colonel Noxolo Patience Rulwa, Strand’s newly appointed visible policing commander, addressing learners about reporting crimes, standing up to bullying and memorising emergency contact numbers.
