EKURHULENI – A deputy principal was shot and wounded while entering the premises of Dinoto Technical Secondary School in Daveyton this morning (7 November), prompting an investigation by police and raising fresh concerns about safety at educational institutions.

The incident took place in the early morning hours as the deputy principal was making his way onto the school grounds. He sustained injuries in the shooting and was immediately transported to a nearby hospital, where he is currently receiving medical treatment.

The Gauteng Department of Education (GDE) described the incident as “deeply disturbing” and dispatched psychosocial support teams to the school to assist traumatised staff and students.

“We are deeply shocked by this incident. Schools are meant to be safe spaces for both learners and educators,” said Gauteng Education MEC Matome Chiloane. “The department condemns this senseless act of violence in the strongest possible terms.”

Police have launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the shooting, though no arrests have been reported at this time.

Despite the incident, the school has continued with ongoing National Senior Certificate (NSC) examinations under close supervision to minimise disruption for students. Officials from the Ekurhuleni North District have been deployed to ensure continued support for the school community.

The shooting has reignited discussions about security measures at schools across the province. Chiloane called on law enforcement authorities to “ensure that those responsible are swiftly brought to justice” and wished the deputy principal “a full and speedy recovery.”

The incident marks another concerning development in school safety within Gauteng, where educational institutions have faced various security challenges in recent years.
