TEMBISA – A 58-year-old school principal and a 55-year-old administrative staff member were fatally shot at Inxiweni Primary School in Tembisa, Ekurhuleni, on Tuesday afternoon in what authorities are calling a senseless act of violence within an educational institution.

The double murder took place at about 17:00 inside the school’s administration block while both women were reportedly preparing for a meeting scheduled for later this week, according to the Gauteng Department of Education (GDE).

Witnesses in a nearby office heard the gunshots and immediately took cover, fearing for their lives. When the situation appeared safe, they emerged to discover the two victims lying in the passageway of the administration block.

Emergency services responded swiftly to the scene but declared both women dead upon arrival. Police have launched a full investigation into the circumstances surrounding the killings, though no suspects have been identified and the motive remains unclear.

The incident prompted an immediate response from senior government officials. Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi and Education MEC Matome Chiloane visited the school Tuesday evening to assess the situation and extend condolences to the grieving families.

“We are horrified by this senseless and brutal act committed within a school, a place meant to be a sanctuary for teaching and learning,” said Chiloane. “Our thoughts and deepest condolences go to the families of the Principal and the staff member whose lives were tragically cut short.”

The GDE has mobilised psychosocial support teams provide counselling and trauma support to learners when they return to school. Employee wellness services will also be deployed to assist affected staff members.

Steve Mabona, spokesperson for the GDE, said that the education department is commitment to supporting the school community during this difficult time.

Chiloane urged law enforcement authorities to “move with speed to bring the perpetrator to justice,” highlighting the severity of violence occurring within educational institutions.

The incident raises fresh concerns about safety and security at schools across the province, with authorities yet to provide details about any security measures that may be implemented in response to the tragedy.
