GQEBERHA – An unannounced early morning search operation at St Albans Correctional Centre has resulted in the seizure of contraband, including mobile phones, sharp objects, mandrax tablets, and packets of dagga.
The raid, led by the National Commissioner of the Department of Correctional Services (DCS) in South Africa, Makgothi Thobakgale, today, 9 April, targeted a specific section of the maximum-security facility following a tip-off.
According to a statement, officials from the Department of Correctional Services conducted the search as part of routine security measures aimed at ‘curbing criminal activity and preventing the smuggling of prohibited items into correctional centres.’
Thobakgale, who led the operation personally, said St Albans remains among the top 10 most overcrowded and high-risk correctional facilities in the country.

In a move aimed at reinforcing accountability, the National Commissioner also subjected correctional officials to searches before turning attention to inmates. The approach, he said, was intended to ensure that all individuals within the facility are held to the same standard.
‘We are concerned with lateness as it impacts negatively on operations,’ Thobakgale said, warning that staff conduct plays a critical role in maintaining safety and operational effectiveness.
The department reiterated its zero-tolerance stance on contraband, warning both inmates and officials against involvement in illegal activities. Thobakgale issued a stern caution that any staff found aiding or abetting the smuggling of contraband would face disciplinary action and possible criminal prosecution.
Authorities have also warned members of the public against attempting to smuggle prohibited items into correctional facilities, stating that ‘offenders will face the full might of the law.’
The Department said routine search operations remain a critical component in maintaining safe and secure correctional centres, whilst also supporting an environment conducive to rehabilitation.
