EASTERN CAPE – Police are investigating the murder of a 46-year-old councillor from the Chris Hani District Municipality.

According to police, MMC for Corporate Services at the municipality, Thumeka Bikwana, was found shot dead inside her home.

Police spokesperson Brigadier Nobuntu Gantana said a resident allegedly noticed the councillor’s driver’s vehicle parked in front of her yard.

“On the morning of 5 May at approximately 09:45, a witness saw the deceased’s driver’s vehicle parked in front of her yard at the Tshatshu Administrative Area,” said Gantana.

“The driver complained that he had been waiting for a long time but the councillor was not coming out.”

The witness allegedly went to check and found the front door wide open.

“The deceased was lying on her back in a pool of blood with a bullet wound to her head,” said Gantana. “The motive is unknown and no suspects have been identified at this stage.”

The case docket has since been transferred to the Provincial Organised Crime Detectives for further investigation under the South African Police Service.
