Police are investigating the discovery of two bodies, believed to be tourists, in the Kruger National Park.

The bodies of two tourists have been found in the northern section of the Kruger National Park, prompting a police investigation into the circumstances surrounding their deaths.

According to a statement issued by the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment, the bodies were discovered on Friday, 22 May 2026, near a river area by other tourists, who immediately alerted SANParks rangers. The discovery followed a search operation that was launched on Thursday evening after camp staff noticed the pair had not returned to their accommodation.

Rangers attending the scene established that the vehicle the tourists had been travelling in was missing.

The South African Police Service is investigating the incident, with SANParks management providing cooperation to authorities.

Minister of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment Willie Aucamp said the families of the victims had been located and notified of the tragedy.

“On behalf of SANParks and the Department, we extend our sincere condolences to the family of the victims during this difficult time,” Aucamp said.

No further information has been released out of respect for the families and to allow the police investigation to proceed without interruption.

The identities of the deceased have not been made public.
