The title race reached fever pitch at the London Stadium on Sunday evening as Arsenal clawed their way to a nervy 1-0 victory over West Ham United, keeping their Premier League dreams alive with just two matches remaining.

Mikel Arteta’s side knew the script before kick-off , anything less than three points would hand the initiative to Manchester City, who had already done their job 24 hours earlier with a clinical victory over Brentford. The pressure was on, and it showed.

The Gunners’ afternoon took a worrying turn midway through the opening period when Ben White clutched his hamstring and trudged off the pitch, leaving Arsenal without a natural right-back for the remainder of the contest. Arteta’s men showed the resilience that has characterised their campaign.

Wave after wave of Arsenal pressure crashed against a resolute Hammers defence, with the clock ticking ominously as the breakthrough refused to materialise. The Emirates faithful’s collective anxiety could almost be felt through television screens across the country.

Then, with just eight minutes remaining on the clock, captain Martin Odegaard delivered the decisive moment. The Norwegian playmaker whipped in a teasing cross that found Leandro Trossard, who made no mistake from close range, turning the ball home to send the travelling support into delirium.

But the drama was far from over.

Deep into second-half stoppage time, West Ham thought they had snatched an unlikely point when Callum Wilson bundled the ball past David Raya. The London Stadium erupted, only for the Video Assistant Referee to intervene. Replays showed a clear foul on the Arsenal goalkeeper in the build-up, and the goal was chalked off.

The final whistle blew moments later, confirming Arsenal’s hard-fought victory and keeping their title aspirations firmly in their own hands. With the run-in approaching its climax, Arteta’s side have demonstrated the mental fortitude required of champions, grinding out results when the performance doesn’t flow.

As the title race enters its final chapters, one thing is certain: the Gunners aren’t going down without a fight. Sunday’s victory may not have been pretty, but in the end, nobody remembers the scoreline, only who lifts the trophy.
