South African actress and model Asavela Mqokiyana is expected to return to the Scottburgh Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday (28 October) after allegedly driving at 198km/h in a 120km/h zone on the N2 in KwaZulu-Natal.
Asavela is known for among others her roles in the soap opera Mzansi Magic and the drama series 1Magic.
According to the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Transport, Mqokiyana was arrested by Road Traffic Inspectorate (RTI) officers from Park Rynie along the N2 at Ellingham. She appeared in court on 19 October.
The department’s statement did not specify the date of her arrest.
Between 15 and 21 October RTI and operation Shanela teams recorded 421 speeding charges and stopped 12 073 vehicles. A total of 1719 motorists were charged.
Of these, 87 motorists were charged with driving without a driver’s license and 141 for failing to wear seatbelts. Authorities also identified 112 unlicensed vehicles and impounded 140 vehicles for operating without required permits.
The department said more than 26 multidisciplinary #NenzaniLaEzweni operations were planned for 22 to 28 October along with 15 operations targeting drunk driving.
The MEC for Transport and Human Settlements said the Road Traffic Inspectorate would remain strict enforcement during the festive season.
