Flames are burning through the dry fynbos and alien vegetation in the mountains above De Doorns in the Hex River Valley in the Western Cape, fuelled by a light wind.

According to the Cape Winelands District Municipality’s (CWDM) Fire Services, the fire started late last on Saturday night (28 March). Their teams responded to the widespread fire and thanks to cooler night temperatures, good progress was made to contain it.

At this stage there is no threat to property or orchards. Harvest season is still in full swing in the area, with more 200 table grape farms located in the fertile valley.

A second team was deployed this morning and hiked to the right flank of the fire line. Progress is also made with containing the flames on the left side, CWDM said. More teams have been deployed this morning to keep the flames in check. They will remain on the scene throughout the day.
