Suspects open fire

The situation escalated dramatically when fleeing suspects began shooting at pursuing officers. Law Enforcement returned fire in self-defence, resulting in two suspects being wounded during the confrontation in St Luke’s Close, Seawinds.

The wounded suspects were immediately transported to Groote Schuur Hospital. Despite the intensity of the shootout no Law Enforcement officers were injured during the operation.

Significant haul recovered

Officers recovered a substantial cache of illegal items from the suspects, including four firearms and 50 rounds of ammunition.

The drug haul included 13 Mandrax tablets and 41 tik sachets, highlighting the connection between vehicle crime and drug trafficking.

Four suspected stolen cellphones were also seized, suggesting the group may have been involved in multiple criminal activities beyond the vehicle hijacking.

One suspect managed to escape during the chaos, and police were continuing their search for the individual.

Multiple charges filed

The five arrested suspects face serious charges including possession of suspected stolen property, illegal drug possession and firearm-related offences. Specifically, they were charged with possession of two unlicensed firearms and two prohibited firearms.

The successful operation demonstrates the effectiveness of intelligence sharing between the police and Law Enforcement, resulting in dangerous criminals being removed from the streets and preventing further potential crimes.
