Emergency infant formula recall over cereulide toxin poses serious health risks.

The Department of Health has issued an emergency recall notice for NAN Special Pro HA Infant Formula after the identification of cereulide, a toxin produced by Bacillus cereus bacteria, which presents significant food safety concerns for infants.

The affected product is the NAN Special Pro HA Infant Formula designed for babies aged 0-12 months, sold in 800g tins. Parents must check their formula stocks immediately and look for the specific batch number 51660742F3, which was manufactured in June 2025

Any households with the affected batch should discontinue use immediately and not feed the formula to their babies under any circumstances.

The recall notice is supported by the National Consumer Commission.

Health risk

Cereulide is a heat-stable toxin that can cause severe food poisoning, with symptoms potentially including nausea, vomiting, and diarrhoea. In infants, whose immune systems are still developing, exposure to such toxins can be particularly dangerous and may lead to serious complications requiring medical intervention.

The toxin is produced by Bacillus cereus, a bacteria commonly associated with food spoilage.

It is resistant to heat treatment, meaning normal sterilisation processes may not eliminate the risk.
