Citro-Soda batches recalled over contamination risk

The South African Health Products Regulatory Authority (SAHPRA) has announced the recall of specific batches of Citro-Soda Regular following a potential contamination risk identified at the Adcock Ingram manufacturing facility in Clayville, Johannesburg.

The recall affects three product variants produced at the facility:

  • Citro-Soda Regular 60 g
  • Citro-Soda Regular 120 g
  • Citro-Soda Regular 4 g x 30 sachets

Details of the affected batch numbers are available on the SAHPRA website and in a recall notice issued by the authority.

SAHPRA will hold a media briefing on Tuesday, 24 March 2026 at 09:30am at the Ronnie Mamoepa Media Centre, Tshedimosetso House, 1035 Francis Baard, Hatfield, Pretoria. The briefing will outline the reasons for the recall, the regulatory decision, and provide guidance to healthcare professionals and the public.

The recall follows a series of inspections at the Adcock Ingram Clayville site. SAHPRA conducted several Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) inspections between August 2023 and October 2024, focusing on sterile eye drops and oral dosage forms.

During an August 2023 inspection, corrective and preventive actions were identified. A follow-up verification inspection in June 2024 found the sterile manufacturing section compliant, but non-compliances were identified in the oral dosage forms section. The manufacturer voluntarily halted production in the affected areas covering liquids, powders and tablets.

A further inspection in October 2024 assessed the interventions, and SAHPRA granted a GMP licence in March 2025 after determining that appropriate remedial actions had been taken.

On 16 April 2025, SAHPRA received a complaint about unhygienic conditions at the facility. Inspectors conducted an unannounced inspection on 22 April 2025, reviewing Citro-Soda batch manufacturing records and inspecting the secondary packaging room previously affected by wastewater discharge.

Microbiological tests for possibly impacted products and the room were negative for contamination. However, inspectors found that cleaning logs lacked cleaning times and instructed the company to update them for campaign batches.

SAHPRA has encouraged members of the public or industry stakeholders with credible information regarding possible non-compliance to submit information through the authority’s official reporting channels.
