Leading through crisis

Crouch’s tenure began during one of the most challenging periods in higher education history. Taking the helm as the Covid-19 pandemic unfolded, he successfully steered the young university through uncharted waters, ensuring uninterrupted academic operations and the completion of the 2020 academic year.

Drawing upon his extensive expertise, Crouch spearheaded the university’s transition to online learning, introducing innovative digital pedagogies that kept both staff and students engaged during lockdown restrictions.

Transformative initiatives

Under Crouch’s leadership, SPU launched several groundbreaking programmes that have reshaped the educational landscape in the Northern Cape. The flagship Talent Pipeline Programme, introduced in October 2021, has provided academically gifted learners from rural and peri-urban schools with enhanced opportunities to pursue higher education.

Recognising the need for long-term sustainability, Crouch initiated an ambitious three-year fundraising campaign aimed at raising R100 million in endowment funds, ensuring perpetual access to university education for young people in the region.

Strengthening community ties

Crouch’s commitment to community engagement culminated in the establishment of the Town and Gown Agreement between SPU and the Sol Plaatje Local Municipality, fostering ongoing collaboration between the university and the city. Community initiatives such as the VC Cycle Challenge and the SPU Community Big Walk have strengthened bonds between the institution and its surrounding communities.

Strategic expansion

Key acquisitions included the Oppenheimer Memorial Gardens and Suzuki Stadium, whilst De Beers donated the iconic Harry Oppenheimer House to serve as the university’s new executive headquarters.

Remarkable growth

Since SPU’s inception in 2014 with just 124 students, the institution has flourished under Crouch’s guidance, growing to accommodate over 7 000 students by 2025. In 2023, the university underwent a significant structural transformation, transitioning from Schools to Faculties whilst expanding into niche academic markets.

The establishment of specialised centres within faculties has reinforced the university’s commitment to community engagement as a scholarly activity, staying true to its vision as “a university critically engaged in learning, research, and development – whilst enhancing democratic practice and social justice in society.”

Crouch’s departure marks the end of an era characterised by unprecedented growth, innovation, and community engagement. His leadership during challenging times and commitment to educational excellence have established a foundation upon which Sol Plaatje University will continue to build its reputation as a leading institution in the Northern Cape and beyond.
