STELLENBOSCH – A crime committed in the West Coast came to a dramatic end in Stellenbosch on Thursday (27 November) when a male suspect died during a high-speed space on the Helshoogte Road.
A part of the busy local road was closed for hours this week after the driver of a blue Volkswagen T-Roc crashed into a tree at the local Super Spar Stellenbosch at high speed. Debris littered the road with some parts of the vehicle scattered on the open field in Idas Valley adjacent to the road.

The driver was flung from the vehicle and declared dead on the scene by medical personnel. Traffic officers were on the scene to divert traffic looking to drive up on the road.
Cloetesville police spokesperson WO Zenobia Sedeman confirmed the driver was a suspect in an alleged hijacking in Porterville and was apparently still fleeing from the crime when he crashed early on Thursday morning. She related: “A hijacking took place in the Porterville area when a woman was on her way to work and she had stopped for a person known to her looking for a lift. On their way the suspect pulled out a screwdriver and held it to her neck.”

According to the police report the victim drove all the way to Gouda, where she stopped to draw money and screamed at onlookers for help. “The suspect started the car and fled.”
On his way to the Boland the suspect picked up two passengers, which Paarl police spotted and a high-speed chase ensued.
The hitchhikers were panicked by the chase, but the suspect said he would slow down and urged the two to jump out, which they did.

The chase continued on the “Agter Paarl” road in the direction of Klapmuts. The suspect sped through Pniël.
When he reached the Helshoogte Road in Idas Valley he struck two vehicles, possibly causing the stolen VW-T-Roc to roll and crash into a tree, claiming his life.
On Thursday morning many people peered over the field’s fence and looked on as police officers took photographs of the scene, before pathology services arrived and took the body of the suspect away.
The incident is being investigated by the Porterville police.
