Schoolboy (12) killed crossing dangerous stretch on Polkadraai Road

A schoolboy lost his life when he apparently ran across a road and was hit by two vehicles outside Stellenbosch this morning (Wednesday 13 May).

The Vlottenburg Primary learner, whom the school has identified as 12-year-old Calvin Jansen, was apparently trying to cross the Polkadraai Road around 06:50 when he was struck by two vehicles. Captain Nathalie Martin, spokesperson for Stellenbosch police, said the boy was attempting to cross the road to wait for his scholar transport when he was struck by two vehicles.

Motorists on the busy road drove past the accident scene, where traffic officials had created a temporary stop-and-go system.

This accident came only weeks after another fatal accident on the same road, occurring almost a month ago to the day. On Tuesday 14 April another pedestrian lost his life while trying to cross the same stretch of road early in the morning. At the time, Martin confirmed that the Stellenbosch police had opened a case of culpable homicide after a motorcycle struck a pedestrian around 06:45. The 48-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics. The motorcyclist was taken to a nearby hospital for medical treatment.

Following the most recent fatal accident, Martin confirmed another case of culpable homicide is under investigation.
