CAPE TOWN – Firefighters are currently battling a blaze that’s sweeping through Phumlani Village today.
At 11:40 the City of Cape Town’s Fire and Rescue Services were alerted to shack fires in Phumlani Village, Pelican Park.
Several crews responded to the incident, including the Incident Management Team Type 4.
“They are working to contain the spread of the fire and limit damages,” said fire-and-rescue spokesperson Jermaine Carelse, “but the prevailing windy conditions are posing a challenge. This is still an active firefighting scene.”
The City could not confirm the extent of the damage or if there were any injuries when People’s Post enquired.
Sayed Ridhwaan from Eagle Park added that emergency services are battling fiercely to contain the rapidly-spreading blaze.
“Firefighters from the City’s Fire and Rescue Services were quick to respond,” he said, “but the density of the shacks and the combustible materials used in their construction have created a firestorm. Strong winds in the area are further fanning the flames, putting immense pressure on the firefighting teams.”
Ward 67 councillor Geraldine Gordon is currently on the scene and also assisted some of the victims on the day.
